Hello!

I'm Ed Parry. I'm a 20 year-old computer science student and a resident of Cardiff, where I'm working as an IT Consultant on an industrial placement.

I decided to take the year out before finishing my degree to gain some real experience within the industry; learning how to sit still for 8 hours, and perfecting my ability to remember 12 individual coffee orders. No, really, I'm lucky enough to be working with real clients on real projects, and I'm absolutely loving it.

Outside of office hours, I love all things related to technology, writing, current affairs and - of course - a good espresso.

  • Welcome to Earth, young man. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, Joe, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of: Goddamn it, Joe, you've got to be kind!

Sitting, Waiting, Wishing...

Friday 15th March 2013

I'm working on implementing a custom platform on which I can use to write here, which is going to take some time. In fact, I'm half tempted to simply wait for Medium to be released to the public. I really like how it's looking so far, and I think tying into a pre-existing platform will benefit everyone, not just myself.

Having said that, I'm still enjoying the process of writing something custom to fill the gap. I'm not looking for anything very substantial; the end product will do no more than find posts written in Markdown, and display them neatly here, with the option to click through and view an article on it's own URL.

There are quite a few static site generators already available out there. If you're a PHP fan, there's PieCrust which looks like a great option. If Ruby is more your style, there's Jekyll and Stasis to name just two. I don't know much Ruby at all, minus what I've picked up so far on Codecademy, but I'm really tempted to give Stasis a try. Even if it purely is based on the nicely designed landing page.

So we shall see. If Medium lands within the next few months, that's likely where I'll head. If not, hopefully by that time something will be close to production, so that will see the light of day. I'll open-source my efforts (providing I don't simply drag-and-drop Stasis).

Oh, and if you're wondering -- the title is a Jack Johnson song.

Let's talk

If you'd like to know more, your best bet would be to find me on Twitter. I'm also on the shiny new App.Net, if that's more your style. Failing that, there's a pretty good chance I'll catch your email from the below form as long as you're not offering me $12,000,000 in return for my first born child. Which I'd have to think about first.
